Mary Qian is a Chinese-born artist recognized for her impressionistic oil portraits that harmoniously blend realism with expressive brushwork. Originally from Shanghai, she earned her B.F.A. from Brigham Young University in 1998.
Mary Qian's early fascination with traditional Chinese calligraphy and watercolor painting continues to inform the grace and sensitivity of her work today.
Before devoting herself fully to painting, Qian built a successful career in digital art and video game design with a division of Warner Bros.
Since moving to Chicago in 2002, she has been deeply involved with the Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, where she now serves on the board of directors.
Qian’s portraits are celebrated for their ability to capture the human spirit, depicting natural, un-posed moments imbued with warmth and life.
Her work has received numerous honors, including Best of Show at the 2007 Salon International and multiple awards from the Palette & Chisel Academy.
